The Building Toys My Kids Still Play With (Years Later!)

Posted on November 18, 2025January 19, 2026 by Katelyn

There’s something special about toys that never seem to lose their magic — the ones that encourage creativity, problem-solving, and endless imagination. In our home, building toys have truly stood the test of time. They’re the toys that get played with every single day, year after year, that grow with our kids and continue to spark new ideas every time they’re pulled out.

As a homeschool and play-loving family, we naturally gravitate toward open-ended toys — the kind that don’t require screens, batteries, or step-by-step instructions. Just imagination, curiosity, and time. These are the classics that have filled our mornings, rainy afternoons, long winter days, and cozy evenings at home.

For reference, my kids are 9, 7, and 6 — a boy, a girl, and a boy — with my two oldest sharing January birthdays. And these are the building toys that have lasted through every season and still bring the same excitement as the day we brought them home.

LEGO

Our most loved and most played-with toy — hands down — has to be LEGO. My mom saved all of my childhood LEGO sets and gifted them to our oldest for Christmas years ago. It was one of those full-circle parenting moments that I’ll never forget.

What I love most about LEGO is how it grows with the kids. When they were really little, we started with the Mega Bloks (which we still have — and they still play with!). That eventually morphed into Duplo LEGO sets, and now that we’re past the “everything goes in the mouth” stage, it’s all about the classic building bricks. They spend hours designing their own creations, building cities, or recreating kits we bought. LEGO encourages creativity, patience, and problem-solving — all while being genuinely fun.

💡 Bonus tip: Get a LEGO table that the kids can sit and build their creations on. We have a small foldable table that stores easily that makes LEGO play much more fun! A great way to organize is with clear drawer bins sorted by color or brick type. My kids aren’t the best at keeping things tidy (let’s be honest), so I eventually gave up on that idea and bought a cloth bin that has a built-in mat. When the bricks are dumped out, they stay mostly contained — in theory! We also display their favorite creations on a shelf for a touch of personality and pride.

Magna-Tiles

If LEGO is the classic building toy, Magna-Tiles are the modern-day version — and just as beloved. These magnetic tiles are perfect for all ages, and my kids have been using them since toddlerhood. We received Mag-Formers which is a great alternative to Magna-Tiles.

They’ve built everything from castles and robots to trucks and towers taller than themselves. What I love most is how Magna-Tiles encourage collaboration — the kids work together to build something big, and there’s almost always a lot of laughter (and maybe a few crashing towers) along the way.

children playing and building with wooden blocks and lincoln logs

Wooden Blocks & Lincoln Logs

There’s just something timeless about the simplicity of wooden toys. Bringing out the Lincoln Logs always takes me back to when I used to build with them, creating elaborate little houses and towns.

Our wooden blocks and Lincoln Logs have been around since my oldest was a toddler, and they still get pulled out regularly. They’re calming to play with — no noise, no flashing lights — just the satisfying sound of blocks stacking or tumbling over. These toys inspire creativity without overstimulation, and they look beautiful displayed in a basket or on a shelf.

Wooden Trains

Train sets have been a favorite since my oldest was just a year old, and they’re still a big hit today. The kids love creating elaborate tracks all over the living room floor, adding bridges, tunnels, and new routes every time they play.

It’s the perfect mix of creativity and construction — building something that moves, connects, and changes each time. We’ve slowly added new track pieces and accessories over the years. I love that it’s a toy that continues to grow with them.

Marble Run

This one is an absolute hit in our home. There’s something mesmerizing about watching the marbles race through the tracks they’ve built.

It’s the perfect blend of creativity and STEM learning, encouraging kids to think critically about angles, speed, and structure. Sometimes the kids build collaboratively; other times they compete to see whose design works best. Either way, it’s always a win.

K’NEX

These building toys are one of those underrated gems that I’m so glad we discovered. K’NEX takes building to another level with all the gears, rods, and moving parts. We found a set complete with a bin at a thrift store — score!

My kids love seeing how all the pieces connect to create something completely their own — from roller coasters to cars to elaborate robots. It’s such a great way for them to explore engineering and design while still feeling like play.

How I Store Them

All of the above — with LEGO as the exception — are stored in their own cloth bins (the size of a 13” cube) in a cube shelf. This keeps each toy contained to its own space, which makes it easy to take out and put away. I also rotate the bins by storing a few away in a large plastic tote at the top of the closet. This simple system has made toy rotation effortless and keeps things feeling new.

If I Had to Pick Just Two…

If I had to choose only a couple of toys to invest in, it would be LEGO and Magna-Tiles — without question. They’ve both grown with my kids through every age and stage, and they never seem to lose their appeal.

They’re the toys that get played with daily and the ones that encourage focus and creativity. They’re ones that can be built, taken apart, and rebuilt again and again in endless ways. I truly feel like you can’t go wrong with either — they’re the foundation of open-ended play in our home.

Why Open-Ended Toys Always Win

What all of these toys have in common is that they invite kids to think, create, and imagine without limits. They’re not one-and-done toys; these have grown with my children, evolving as their skills and imaginations expand. And I love how their collection can be easily expanded by purchasing

They also have something special that’s hard to find in today’s fast-paced, screen-heavy world — they encourage focus. I’ve watched my kids spend hours lost in building, collaborating, and storytelling. Those are the moments that feel like childhood at its best.

So if you’re looking for toys that truly last — not just in durability, but in engagement and joy — building toys are the ones to keep around for years to come.
