Comfort Toys My Kids Reach For Again and Again

Posted on December 3, 2025January 19, 2026 by Katelyn

Today I’m talking about the comfort items—the cozy, calming, always-within-arm’s-reach things that help my kids wind down, reset, and feel safe.

These are the toys that live on beds, in baskets by the couch, and often end up tucked under arms in the car. They’re not flashy or trendy, but they make a huge difference in our daily rhythm—especially during long Michigan winters.

Here are the two comfort items we love in our family that get used daily:

Stuffed Animals

All three of my kids love stuffed animals, but our youngest is especially attached to his “stuffies.” They’re a big comfort item for him, and honestly, they get a ton of love from everyone. The kids use them for comfort and cuddling, pretend play, and building cozy nests to read and relax in.

We have a mix of:

  • Character stuffies like Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Small classic animals like dogs and bears
  • Large stuffed animals like dinosaurs
  • Plenty of plush Disney princesses
  • Warmies for extra comfort

One of my kids’ favorite things to pick out at the thrift store is stuffed animals. They are so inexpensive secondhand, and we’ve found some really sweet, unique ones over the years. I just make sure they’re washable, run them through a good wash, and then they’re ready to be loved.

Because stuffies can multiply quickly, we try to keep a limit. We have two large metal bins for stuffed animals (like this one and this one)—one in my daughter’s room and one in the boys’ room. When the bins get too full, it’s a sign that it’s time to declutter and pare down to the true favorites again.

Disney princess plushies

My daughter has a collection of Disney princess plushies that feel extra special. I remember her as a little toddler holding onto her dolls and bringing them everywhere. She usually gets new ones for Christmas or her birthday, and they’ve become some of her most treasured comfort toys.

They can be a little hard to find, but I’ve managed to track down several at thrift stores and on eBay for great prices.

Warmies

The real heroes on the hardest days, though, are our Warmies—soft, heatable stuffed animals that you warm in the microwave for a short time. They come out warm, slightly weighted, and lightly scented with lavender.

Warmies are especially loved when someone has a tummy ache or their feeling a bit under the weather, when we’re having a slow, snuggly day, and when the kids need a little extra comfort at bedtime. Sometimes having something warm and snuggly is exactly what they need to relax and fall asleep.

Yoto Players & Cards

Our Yoto Players have been one of the best additions to our home in the past couple of years. The kids use them every single day—for stories, music, podcasts, quiet time, and bedtime.

Each child has their own Yoto Player and a pair of corded headphones, which has been amazing for both their independence (and my sanity). We keep all the cards together in a hard card case, so everything stays organized, easy to see, and easy to grab.

What I love most about the Yoto Player is that it’s screen-free, kid-controlled, and perfect for building a love of stories and reading. The kids used to ask me to “play music in their headphones” from my phone. Now, with soundtrack cards and Kidz Bop cards, they can simply choose a card, pop it in, and listen to whatever they’re in the mood for. I love it and so do they!

Our favorite Yoto story cards

Some of the classic stories that are on constant rotation in our house:

  • A Little Princess
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • Little Women
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Princess Storybook Collection
  • The BFG
  • James and the Giant Peach
  • Matilda
  • The Witches
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox

Educational cards we love (homeschool win!)

As a homeschool parent, I especially love how many educational cards are available. My kids really love the Brain Bots collections. They’re fun, fast-paced, and full of interesting facts. Right now we have:

  • Brain Bots Dinosaurs – all about paleontology and, of course, dinosaurs
  • Brain Bots Biggest Ideas – focused on inventors and their inventions
  • Brain Bots Our Planet – all about Earth science
  • Earth Explorers – every continent explored and packed with fun facts
  • My First Words in Spanish card

One of my favorite Yoto features is the “Make Your Own” cards. I’ve used these to create multiplication practice recordings, readings of our history book, and the kids even have fun making up their own stories!

It feels like such a gift that they can review school topics in a low-pressure, cozy way.

How Yoto fits into our daily rhythm

The Yoto Players are woven into our day in so many little ways:

  • Bedtime routine: The kids choose a story, some calming music, or a soundscape to listen to as they fall asleep.
  • Quiet time or rest time: When someone needs a reset, they curl up with a blanket, a stuffed animal, and a Yoto story.
  • Playing around the house: They’ll listen to cards while building with LEGO, drawing, or doing pretend play.
  • Car rides: We bring a Yoto and our card case along for screen-free entertainment on longer drives.
  • Yoto Daily & kids’ radio: The kids love the Yoto Daily podcast, which often includes drawing prompts and fun facts. There’s also a kids’ radio station with age-appropriate songs from all different eras.

I originally bought our first Yoto to help my oldest wind down at night and to encourage a love of reading and stories. It did that beautifully—but it quickly turned into so much more for our whole family. Now, it’s one of those items I can’t imagine our home without.

Final Thoughts on Comfort & Favorites

Comfort toys might seem simple from the outside—soft animals, a small audio player on a nightstand—but they play a huge role in helping kids feel grounded, safe, and peaceful.

For our family, that looks like a curated collection of beloved stuffed animals (plus Warmies for extra coziness) and Yoto Players and cards that give the kids independence, stories, music, and learning.

These are the kinds of things that get used day after day, year after year. Not just “fun for a week” toys, but steady, comforting favorites that quietly support our days.

💬 I’d love to hear from you. What comfort toys or items do your kids reach for again and again? Do you have any childhood comfort items you still remember?

Share your favorites in the comments—I’m always looking for sweet, cozy ideas to add to our list.

This list is the fourth post in a little series I’ll be sharing all about our tried-and-true toys. In the coming weeks, I’ll dive deeper into each category — from creative toys to family favorites — and share how they’ve grown with our kids over the years. And I’ll also be sharing what I’m getting my kids for this year’s Christmas (and birthdays).

So if you’re looking for simple, meaningful gift inspiration or want to create a home filled with toys that truly last, stay tuned — and make sure to check back for the next post in this cozy series. (You can always check out my affiliate links that contain all our well loved toys – Amazon and LTK. I’ll be adding and updating it regulary. It helps to support my family while I create free content like this!)
